Dirt Wheels Magazine featured Mechanical Concepts’ shop-built desert quad — a 2023 CRF450R engine dropped into a reinforced 2005 TRX450R frame, with +4 A-arms, 12″ of front travel, a custom forward-energy rear linkage, and a hand-formed 5-gallon aluminum fuel tank TIG-welded from flat plate, no CAD.
“We just wanted to conquer the desert, so we shot for wheel travel, ground clearance, comfort, and fuel capacity,” says Mike Davis, owner and builder.
The quad was built for real desert racing, not a show floor — unpainted chromoly by design, so it can take a field repair mid-race.

Mechanical Concepts fielded entry Q17 at the 2026 Mint 400, with Alex Ortiz as driver of record and a Mechanical Concepts pit crew that included Mike Davis, Jordan Davis, and Josh Patereau — the same crew behind the shop’s builds. Ortiz brought the entry home 5th in Quad Pro.
